In this interview with BANKOLE TAIWO, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, discusses the significance of celebrating Nobel laureate Prof Wole Soyinka’s 90th birthday and other topical issues. Excerpts:
Why is Egbaland celebrating Prof Soyinka's 90th birthday?
The question should be, "Why not?" If you have a son who has excelled and brought honor to your name worldwide, you must celebrate him. Prof Soyinka has consistently fought for social justice and made immense contributions to academia globally. He is a soldier of humanity blessed with longevity and sound health, deserving of daily celebration, not just for reaching 90 years.
Prof Soyinka is rarely seen in public, often surrounded by myths and awe. Who is he really?
He is what the Yoruba people call "akanda," a special being, an enigma, and a living legend. Prof Soyinka is unique, created by the Almighty God, unwavering in his convictions for justice, good governance, and accountability. He comes from a family rooted in fighting for truth, taught by figures like Rev Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, who also inspired Fela and Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti.
Why is Egbaland rolling out the drums to celebrate Prof Soyinka?
Soyinka is a global icon, a living legend, and a respected elder statesman with roots in Ake, Abeokuta. Egbaland celebrates him for the unquantifiable honor and glamour he has brought to Ogun State. July 13, his birthday, will now be celebrated as Wole Soyinka Day in Egbaland and abroad.
What is the relationship between Prof Soyinka and the Kutis?
They are cousins. Soyinka’s mother, an activist, is from the Kuti family.
Do you have a close relationship with Prof Soyinka?
I was born in the same place and delivered by the same midwife as Prof Soyinka, nine years later. Our houses were close, and we have always known him as destined for greatness.
Does Prof Soyinka contribute to the development of Egbaland?
Yes, he does when involved. He is straightforward and supportive of efforts to develop Egbaland.
How do you feel about Prof Soyinka's conflicts with former President Olusegun Obasanjo?
I am not disturbed. Different viewpoints are natural, and Soyinka’s actions reflect his strong beliefs.
Prof Soyinka started schooling at two years old. Can you tell us more?
Yes, he took himself to St Peters Primary School, Ake, at about two years old. God had destined him for greatness from a young age.
What is special about Egbaland?
Egbaland is the first to embrace Western culture and Christianity, establish a hospital, and produce icons like Prof Soyinka.
Should the Federal Government recognize July 13 as Wole Soyinka Day?
Yes, Soyinka is a global pride. The Federal Government should honor him with a national day and confer the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger on him.
What specific celebrations are planned for Soyinka's 90th birthday?
The two-day celebration includes art exhibitions, cultural performances, book exhibitions, documentaries, poetry recitals, and hunting expeditions.
Prof Soyinka is known for avoiding ostentatious celebrations. Will he be physically present?
Whether he is present or not, we celebrate him and let the world know his value.
What lessons should we learn from Prof Soyinka's life?
Support children in their legitimate passions to help them become the giants God intends.
Is the Ogun State government involved in the celebration?
Yes, government support is essential for celebrating an icon like Soyinka.
What is your wish for Kongi at 90?
May God grant him continued good health and longevity to keep writing and inspiring.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities threatens another strike. What do you say about this?
Disrupting education harms our children. ASUU should rally public support and avoid sudden strikes.
The leadership of ASUU has been sensitizing the public. What advice do you offer President Bola Tinubu?
The President listens and will take action.
There has been friction between traditional stools and government. Are politicians a threat to traditional institutions?
Politicians succeeded traditional institutions. We need a constitutional monarchy to reduce friction.
What is your take on state police to combat growing insecurity?
State police are necessary for effective crime control. We must return to this system for better security.
What advice do you give the government about the harsh economy?
As a traditional ruler, I discuss issues privately with the President, who feels the people’s pain and will act decisively.
Is the President aware of Nigerians' struggles and planning to address them?
Yes, he is. The President is an Egba chief and understands the challenges. We will overcome them soon by God's grace.
